DASNY MWBE Outreach Event Buffalo July 2014 FINAL
.

(Albany, NY) In support of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s commitment to maximize opportunity for New York businesses, DASNY (the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York ) will host a business outreach and networking reception on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Buffalo Hyatt Regency from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

DASNY has invited key state and local agencies and authorities; leading construction management companies and representatives from Buffalo’s major economic project drivers to join them for this complimentary and interactive MWBE event.

“Last year, under Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s leadership, the utilization of minority-– and women- owned businesses in state contracts reached a record 21.06 %. In all, $1,488 billion in contracts from a total of 97 public agencies and authorities were awarded to Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) in FY 2012-2013,” said DASNY President Paul T. Williams, Jr. “Events like this will help ensure that MWBE firms are aware of the possibilities available to them so that we can continue to build upon our past success.”

Information about upcoming procurement and bid opportunities will be provided, along with guidance on how to pursue new business opportunities in Western New York. Key presentations include: an overview of the NYS Contract System, including how prime contractors and subcontractors can benefit from it, and a panel discussion moderated by Michael M. Clay, DASNY Director,Opportunity Programs Group, where state and local agency MWBE representatives will discuss strategies for success in achieving 20% MWBE participation on projects.

The conversation continues after the presentations with a networking reception where attendees will be able to speak with key project managers and business owners.

Interested business owners are asked to send a RSVP to DASNYinWNY@gmail.com by July 18, 2014.

The Power of Networking and Your Business Growth

As diversity flourishes, so does business

As Buffalo’s field of dreams grows along the waterfront and Medical Campus, some involved in the long struggle to get minority-owned businesses a share of the action say the answer increasingly is “yes.”

Maybe that explains the turnout this week when Global Spectrum, the company managing Canalside, held an outreach meeting in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center to lay out some of the business opportunities. About half of the more than 50 entrepreneurs who showed up were black.

It was the second such meeting the company has held since being hired by Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. in January. The temptation is to dismiss such events as dog-and-pony shows – until you hear stories such as Anita Sanders’.

Sanders went to the first meeting in March, heard about the opportunity to supply everything from food and uniforms to paper products and cleaning supplies, and then posed an inquiry. “I just asked the question, ‘Do you need security?’ He said, ‘Yes,’ and it went on from there,” said Sanders, who used her experience as a Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority police officer and her master’s degree in management to start Trace Assets Protection Service two years ago.

Now she has a contract with Canalside for Thursdays at the Square and weekend events, guarding everything from ticket receipts to bank deposits.

Her advice to other minorities looking to get a foot in the door? “Make sure you follow through … and go to the meetings,” she said, echoing the advice of Jennifer Parker, who was hired by Eric Mower + Associates to put together an outreach effort to minority and female entrepreneurs for Canalside.
